Kolophon's bronze coinage of this period reflects the city's precarious position during the Wars of the Diadochi — the decades of brutal succession conflict following Alexander's death in 323 BC. The city changed hands repeatedly between the rival generals, and local bronze issues like this one served the everyday economy when larger silver denominations were being melted or hoarded for military payments.
Kolophon was forcibly synoikized into the newly founded Lysimacheia around 299 BC, its population relocated by Lysimachos. Issues struck after that date may represent residual civic production under duress rather than independent municipal authority.
