Laos began issuing lunar new year commemoratives in the early 2000s primarily for the export collector market — these pieces saw no meaningful domestic circulation and were distributed almost entirely through European and Asian coin dealers. The Bank of the Lao PDR functioned here essentially as a licensing authority, with production handled by foreign mints under contract.
KM# 93 is one of the scarcer issues in the lunar series, with the Pig year commanding less secondary market attention than the Dragon or Horse years despite comparable mintage figures.
