Issued to mark the 1020th anniversary of Stephen I's coronation, which by Hungarian tradition occurred on Christmas Day 1000 AD — a date chosen with papal blessing to align Hungary's foundation with the Christian calendar and distance it from Byzantine influence. Stephen received his crown from Pope Sylvester II, and that act of Roman allegiance shaped Hungarian ecclesiastical and political alignment for centuries.
The Adamo reference places this squarely in the Magyar Nemzeti Bank's modern commemorative bullion program, which has leaned heavily on Árpád-dynasty subjects since the 1990s.
