Additional information

András I came to the Hungarian throne in 1046 following a pagan uprising that expelled the Christian clergy and briefly reversed Stephen I's ecclesiastical reforms. His reign is chiefly remembered for founding the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany in 1055, whose foundation charter survives as the oldest document containing continuous Hungarian-language text — a fragment of a living tongue catching its first written breath mid-Latin sentence. The abbey still stands on the Tihany peninsula above Lake Balaton.
