正面描述 Plain, lightly textured field bearing the retrograde or irregular Latin legend COR in the upper centre, attributable to the name of the Dobunnic ruler Corio. The three characters are rendered in a native Celtic lapidary style, boldly incuse against a largely blank flan. The surrounding field is undecorated, consistent with the abbreviated inscriptional quarter-stater coinage of the late Iron Age Dobunni. The irregular, slightly chipped flan edge is characteristic of hammered Celtic coinage of this period.

背面描述 Stylised Celtic horse prancing to the left, depicted in the abstract, fragmented manner characteristic of late Iron Age British coinage. The horse's body is rendered with curvilinear limbs and a segmented torso, surrounded by a field filled with pellets, annulets, and concentric ring ornaments. Above the horse, a schematic human head or rider element is discernible, rendered in typical Dobunnic artistic convention. The overall design is derived from distorted Macedonian stater prototypes, transformed into a distinctly native decorative composition. No legend or inscription appears on the reverse.

附加信息

The Dobunni occupied territory centered on what is now Gloucestershire, and Corio is one of only a handful of British Iron Age rulers whose name appears on coinage — a practice that began in southeastern Britain and spread westward only gradually. Whether "Corio" denotes a king, a chief magistrate, or some other authority is still debated; no supporting historical documentation exists outside the coins themselves.

Quarter staters of this type are significantly rarer than the full stater series, likely produced for specific transactional purposes rather than broad circulation.
