| Beschrijving voorzijde | Plain, uninscribed obverse displaying a highly stylised and abstracted head in profile, rendered in the bold, schematic Celtic tradition. The design is reduced to a minimal arrangement of raised linear elements suggesting facial features, with little naturalistic detail remaining. The field is otherwise flat and unadorned. The flan is irregular and slightly convex, typical of hammered Celtic quarter staters of this period. |

Commius was by any measure an extraordinary figure — a Gaul who served Caesar as a trusted envoy before switching sides during the Belgic uprisings of 54–52 BC and ultimately fleeing to Britain to escape Roman retribution, where he established the Atrebatic dynasty. These small gold fractions were likely struck during his time as king in southern Britain, the physical currency of a man the Romans had every reason to want dead.
