The bow and club are the emblems of Herakles and serve as the principal reverse type of Alexander's gold coinage. Struck at Lampsakos on the Hellespont — a mint Alexander activated specifically to fund his eastern campaigns — these quarter staters served as small-denomination payments for soldiers and merchants operating along critical supply lines into Asia. Lampsakos was already a major gold-processing center before Alexander's arrival, which is precisely why he chose it. Price 1361 is among the better-documented die pairings from this mint, with the SNG Berry specimen providing a useful reference point for the series.
