Beschrijving keerzijde Apollo seated left on an omphalos, his nude torso turned slightly toward the viewer, holding a lyre in his left hand and extending his right hand forward. A serpent coils beneath the seat, referencing the Delphic tradition. The figure is rendered with confident anatomical modeling characteristic of mid-Hellenistic engraving. The ethnic inscription ΑΚΑΡΝΑΝΩΝ is placed vertically in the right field in Greek characters, identifying the issuing confederacy. A control mark appears in the lower exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

The Akarnanian Confederacy struck gold at a moment of genuine political urgency. Following decades of pressure from Aetolia and intermittent Macedonian interference, the koinon consolidated its federal coinage in the mid-third century as a deliberate assertion of collective identity — gold issues in particular signaling fiscal coordination among member poleis that rarely agreed on much else. The quarter-stater denomination was almost certainly intended for mercenary pay or treaty obligations rather than everyday exchange, given the near-total absence of wear on surviving specimens.
