The Kamboja kingdom occupied territory in the northwestern reaches of the Indian subcontinent — broadly corresponding to parts of modern Afghanistan and Pakistan — and its punch-marked coinage belongs to the earliest documented monetary tradition in South Asia. These fractional silver pieces circulated alongside those of rival janapadas at a time when standardization was more aspiration than reality, and the shatamana weight standard itself varied enough between issuing polities that exchange required careful handling.
