Augustus reorganized Cyrenaica into a combined senatorial province with Crete around 27 BC, ending a period of direct imperial administration that had followed Rome's annexation of the region as a bequest from Ptolemy Apion in 96 BC. Small civic bronzes of this type circulated alongside the formal Roman colonial coinage, filling the gap left by the near-total collapse of Ptolemaic monetary infrastructure. The SCAT reference places this piece within a tightly defined provincial sequence, though die linkage studies for Cyrenaican bronzes of this period remain incomplete.
