Kallatis, the Dorian colony on the west coast of the Black Sea, maintained an unusually stubborn independence through the Hellenistic period — including a prolonged conflict with Lysimachos in the late 4th century that left the city besieged for years. Small bronzes like this one were the workhorses of local exchange, circulating within a trading economy oriented around grain and salted fish exports to the Aegean world.
The AMNG I-I#246 reference places this within Pick's foundational 1898 corpus of western Pontic bronzes, still the primary reference for Kallatian small coinage.
