The Boii, a Celtic people whose territory spanned parts of modern Bohemia and the Po Valley, minted gold coinage heavily influenced by Macedonian prototypes — Philip II's staters filtered northward through trade and mercenary payment and were systematically abstracted over generations into increasingly stylized forms. The Alkidemos type sits well along that devolution curve.
By the second century BC, Boian political cohesion was fracturing under Roman military pressure. Their defeat at the Battle of Mutina in 194 BC preceded a mass migration northward across the Alps, and coinage from this terminal phase of Boian Cisalpine occupation is correspondingly difficult to attribute to specific sub-phases with confidence.
