Lappa was one of the inland cities of western Crete, situated near modern Argyroupoli, and maintained its own bronze coinage through much of the Hellenistic period largely independent of the coastal powers that dominated Cretan politics. The city survived the Roman pacification of Crete under Quintus Caecilius Metellus in 67 BC — the terminal date for this issue — partly through early capitulation, a pragmatic move that spared it the destruction visited on Kydonia and other holdouts.
