Reverse description The elaborately rendered Portuguese royal coat of arms of the third shield type occupies the central field, featuring the quartered escutcheon with the traditional quinas (five bezants arranged in saltire) and the castles of the bordure, all enclosed within an ornate Baroque cartouche with scrolling acanthus foliage and shell-like ornaments flanking the sides. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown, finely detailed with fleurs-de-lis and arched bands. The reverse field is otherwise plain, with no legend, the entire design contained within a reeded border matching the obverse.
