| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the Portuguese royal arms — a shield displaying the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) within a bordure of castles — surmounted by a royal crown. Two pellets (or roundels) flank the shield at mid-field, serving as decorative stops. The circumferential legend in Latin reads IOANNES·IV·D·G·REX·PORTVGALIE, separated by pellet stops, and is contained within the beaded border characteristic of hammered colonial coinage of the period. |
