Obverse description Left-facing draped and uniformed bust of King Carol I of Romania, wearing military dress adorned with medals and decorations. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic portrait style characteristic of late 19th-century European coinage. The legend encircling the bust reads CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI with the regnal anniversary dates 1866-1906, and the engraver's signature A. MICHAUX appears below.
