This piece belongs to the Royal Belgian Mint's "12½ Euro" gold series, a format introduced specifically to issue small-denomination collectibles at an accessible price point for general collectors rather than the bullion market. Louise-Marie d'Orléans, the subject of this issue, became Belgium's first queen consort when she married Léopold I in 1832 — a dynastic union engineered partly to strengthen the newly independent Belgian state's diplomatic ties with France and Britain simultaneously.
She died in 1850 at Ostend, aged 38, having outlived two of her children.
