At center are two gold-plated insets reproducing the Saxon 3 Mark coin of 1917: the obverse insert shows the armored bust of Friedrich the Wise with the legend 'EIN FESTE BURG IST UNSER GOTT 1517–1917', and the reverse insert displays the Imperial German eagle with 'DEUTSCHES REICH 1917 DREI MARK'.
