Issued to commemorate Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the founding father and first Prime Minister of independent Mauritius, this platinum piece is one of the rarest modern issues from the Bank of Mauritius — platinum collector coinage from small island nations rarely sees production runs exceeding a few hundred pieces. Ramgoolam led the country to independence from Britain in 1968 after years of negotiation, and remained a dominant figure in Mauritian politics until his death in 1985.
The 1,200-rupee denomination itself is effectively ceremonial, bearing no relationship to any transactional value.
