Opmerkingen

This note began life as a João Prince Regent issue — Pick 8 — before being overprinted to acknowledge Pedro IV's accession following João VI's death in March 1826. Pedro IV's reign in Portugal lasted roughly two months before he abdicated in favor of his daughter Maria, making any instrument issued in his name during that window historically compressed to an unusual degree. The overprint was the expedient solution: rather than retire existing stock, the Real Erário simply restamped it.

The brevity of Pedro IV's Portuguese reign means surviving overprinted examples document one of the shortest royal tenures in Braganza history.
