Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of King George III facing right, with flowing hair tied with a ribbon bow at the nape. The legend GEORIII D.G. BRITT. REX F.D. arcs around the periphery, with the date 1817 positioned in the exergue. Applied over the king's portrait is a circular Portuguese countermark consisting of a royal crown surmounting the initials G.P., punched in an incuse oval or circular indent; this countermark, applied in 1887, authenticated the host shilling for circulation in the Azores at the value of 120 Réis.
