| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse of the host Tostão coin displays the Portuguese royal arms — a shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) — centrally placed in the field, with a circular Latin legend running along the periphery. Prominently applied over the shield is the rectangular countermark of João IV, bearing the numerals '120' in raised relief within a recessed punch, authorizing the coin's revaluation to 120 Réis by royal decree of 1642. The countermark partially obscures the underlying arms and legend of the host coin, which varies depending on the original issuing monarch. The hammered flan is irregular in shape, with typical surface characteristics of early modern Portuguese silver coinage. |
