| Obverse description | The royal coat of arms of Portugal under King José I occupies the central field, displaying the quartered escutcheon with the traditional Portuguese quinas and the castles of Castile, all surmounted by an ornate crowned mantle. The shield is flanked by elaborate scrollwork and decorative supporters rendered in the vigorous, somewhat crude style characteristic of hammered colonial coinage struck at the Goa mint. No peripheral legend is present, the entire design being dominated by the heraldic device. The hammered technique imparts a slightly irregular flan and bold relief to the armorial elements. |

| Reverse description | A bold Cross of Saint Thomas (Cruz de São Tomé) with decorative trefoil terminals occupies the full field, its four arms dividing the die into quadrants. The denomination numeral 12 appears in the upper-left quadrant and the abbreviation X (for Xerafins) in the upper-right quadrant, while the split date is distributed across the lower two quadrants, with 17 at lower-left and 81 at lower-right, as seen on this 1781 example. The cross arms are double-lined with the characteristic flared and lobed ends associated with the Portuguese Estado da India coinage tradition. No peripheral legend is present. |
