Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms at center, consisting of a quartered escutcheon bearing the traditional quinas and castles, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown with cross finial. The shield is flanked on either side by symmetrical olive or laurel branches whose stems cross at the base, forming a wreath-like frame. The entire design is rendered in the bold, slightly crude style characteristic of hammered coinage produced at the Goa Mint, with a beaded border encircling the field. The encircling legend reads MARIA II REYNA DE PORTUGAL.
