Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a large ornate cross with trefoil or fleur-de-lis terminals at each arm, a design derived from the Cross of the Order of Christ, emblematic of Portuguese imperial authority. The four cantons formed by the arms of the cross are occupied by the denomination numeral 12 in the upper left, the xerafins abbreviation X in the upper right, and the date 1783 split across the lower two cantons. The numerals are boldly rendered in the characteristic style of the Goa hammered series. A milled or granulated border runs along the coin's edge, consistent with the reverse border treatment. The overall composition reflects the standard typology of Portuguese colonial gold coinage struck at Goa during the joint reign of Maria I and Pedro III.
