| Reverse description | Central field features the Cross of the Order of Christ (Cruz de Cristo), a large cross pattée with splayed arms, each quadrant charged with a quatrefoil or four-petalled floral ornament, all rendered in high relief. The cross fills the majority of the reverse field and is a hallmark device of the Portuguese monetary tradition. The surrounding circular legend reads IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer), the Constantinian motto adopted by the Portuguese crown. Small asterisk or rosette stops separate the words of the legend. The beaded border frames the entire composition. |
