Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, a Portuguese nobleman appointed Grand Master in 1722, used his considerable personal fortune to fund public works across Malta — most notably the fortified town of Vilhena (now Floriana) and the theatre that bore his name. His coinage reflects the same ambition: the 12 Tari was the Order's principal silver denomination, and Vilhena's issues are among the better-executed of the 18th-century Grand Mastership series.
Gatt's reference corpus for Maltese coinage remains the standard attribution for Order issues, though die marriages within this type show enough variation that examples occasionally surface with unlisted combinations.
