Obverse description The obverse displays the interlaced GWC cypher — the crowned monogram of the Geoctroyeerde Westindische Compagnie (Dutch West India Company) — at the center of the field, accompanied by the Roman numeral denomination XII and the date 1654, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The design is struck on a square klippe flan with characteristically irregular, roughly cut edges, consistent with emergency coinage produced under siege conditions at Recife in 1654. The overall execution is bold but somewhat crude, reflecting the urgency of its production as Portuguese forces closed in on the Dutch colony of New Holland.
