The Bastarnae occupied a contested zone between the Carpathians and the lower Danube, and their gold issues imitating Lysimachean staters reflect sustained contact with Hellenistic monetary culture rather than any direct political submission to it. By the time these pieces were struck, Lysimachos himself had been dead for over two centuries — the type survived purely on commercial authority, recognizable enough to pass in cross-cultural exchange along the Pontic steppe routes.
The half-stater denomination is considerably rarer than the full stater in this series, suggesting it filled a specific transactional role rather than serving as the primary unit of account.
