| Obverse description | Celticised barbarian imitation of the head of Herakles facing right, rendered in a stylised, degenerate manner characteristic of Celtic die-cutting. A diminutive schematic figure appears on the nose, a notable artistic peculiarity of this issue. A pellet within an annulet is positioned in the field before the face. The Bastarnae occupied a contested zone between the Carpathians and the lower Danube, and by the second century BC they had become deeply entangled in Macedonian and Pontic political maneuvering — Antigonos Doson recruited them as mercenaries, and Perseus later sought their military support before Pydna. Their coinage borrows the authority of Lysimachos not out of cultural affinity but because his gold staters had circulated widely enough in the region to function as a trusted weight standard. This is a local imitation working within that commercial logic.
