Obverse description Youthful male head facing right, depicted in the Heraklean type, wearing the skin of the Nemean lion with the scalp drawn over the crown of the head, its jaws framing the brow in characteristic Macedonian tradition. The modeling of the facial features is bold and idealizing, with a strong jaw, full lips, and a pronounced brow ridge rendered in high relief. The lion's mane cascades behind the neck in richly detailed, flowing locks. The field is plain and unlettered, with the entire design executed in the vigorous Hellenistic style derived from the coinage of Alexander the Great. The flan is compact and slightly irregular, as is typical of hammered Greek gold coinage of this period.
