| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device consisting of a stylized silphium plant — the iconic emblem of Kyrene — rising from a low base, its multiple branching stems each terminating in rounded globular seed-heads, rendered in pronounced high relief. The Greek letters Θ and Ε appear in the lower field to either side of the plant's base, serving as magistrate or control marks. The entire design is enclosed within a raised linear border accompanied by a bold dotted bead-and-reel outer border, a hallmark of Kyrenaean gold coinage of this period. The silphium, a now-extinct medicinal and culinary plant unique to the Cyrenaican plateau, was the principal source of the city's wealth and its most enduring numismatic symbol. |
