The circumferential Latin legend QVÆ · DEVS · CONIVNXIT · NEMO · SEPARET — derived from the Gospel of Matthew and denoting the union of the crowns — encircles the entire device. The reverse composition reflects the political and religious symbolism central to Stuart coinage, asserting the divine sanction of the union of the British kingdoms. |
