Reverse description Nude figure of Taras, the mythological founder of Tarentum, depicted riding a dolphin to the right in his characteristic pose. He holds a kantharos (drinking cup) in his outstretched left hand and a trident over his right shoulder, with a small Nike or similar figure appearing in the right field. The Greek civic legend TAPAΣ is inscribed in the lower exergue. The rendering of the dolphin-rider motif, the city's emblematic type, reflects the enduring iconographic tradition of Tarentine coinage, here executed in the compact format appropriate to a half-shekel denomination.
