背面描述 A vine leaf or wreath motif encircles the central field, within which a small circular device or symbol is visible. The abbreviated Greek legend referencing the title Ethnarch is distributed around the field. The overall style is characteristic of the small hammered bronzes struck under Herod Archelaus, with a dotted border and crude but recognizable die work. The flan is irregular in outline, consistent with hand-struck Judaean coinage of the early first century AD.

附加信息

Archelaus inherited roughly half of Herod the Great's kingdom in 4 BC — Judaea, Samaria, and Idumaea — but was denied the title of king by Augustus, who made him ethnarch pending a demonstration of competent rule. He never got there. A joint delegation of Jews and Samaritans, two groups who agreed on almost nothing, traveled to Rome to petition for his removal. Augustus exiled him to Vienne in Gaul in 6 AD, at which point his territory became the Roman province of Judaea under direct prefectural administration.
