Diodotus I declared independence from the Seleucid Empire sometime around 256 BC, making Baktria one of the first satrapies to break away during the slow fragmentation of Alexander's successor kingdoms. His copper issues are the foundational coinage of what became a remarkably sophisticated numismatic tradition in the region — but these fractional bronzes circulated hard in the markets of Bactria and Sogdia, and survivors with any surface integrity are genuinely uncommon. The Bopearachchi reference numbers 8 and 9 distinguish die variants within the type.
