Obverse description Crowned quartered shield of arms occupying the central field, displaying the heraldic devices of Hesse-Darmstadt including a lion passant, a cross, a star, and horizontal barry stripes; a small escutcheon with a lion is placed at the fess point. The crowned arms are surmounted by an elaborate arched crown, and the entire composition is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A continuous Latin legend surrounds the shield in the outer field, reading the titles of Landgrave Ernest Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt.
