Additional information

Bern struck this issue during a period of acute monetary fragmentation across the Swiss Confederacy, when dozens of cantonal and civic authorities were producing incompatible denominations that made cross-regional trade a practical nightmare. The 12 Kreuzer — a mid-range silver value — was an attempt to anchor daily commerce to a recognizable unit without committing to the heavier Taler coinage that strained bullion reserves.

The Thirty Years' War had just entered its second year, and the monetary instability radiating outward from the German states was already distorting Swiss markets. HMZ 1#2-195 documents only limited die varieties for this type.
