Sigismund von Schrattenbach held the archbishopric from 1753 until his death in 1771, and multi-ducat presentation pieces like this were struck not for circulation but as diplomatic gifts and courtly largesse — a practice the Salzburg mint maintained with particular consistency throughout the eighteenth century. At twelve ducats weight in near-pure gold, this was an object of deliberate political theater, given to emperors, princes, and favored nobility.
The Zöttl reference places this as a type 3 striking, indicating die progression within the 1753 emission rather than a separate issue.
