Obverse description Draped bust of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha, facing right, wearing a voluminous curled allonge wig in the Baroque court fashion, with an ornate lace cravat visible at the truncation. A small engraver's initial 'K' appears below the bust truncation. The circular Latin legend reads FRIDERICVS II D G DVX SAXO GOTHANVS along the upper periphery, with CARI GENITORIS IMAGO along the lower periphery, the whole contained within a finely milled or toothed border. The portrait is executed in high relief with considerable sculptural detail, characteristic of early eighteenth-century German court coinage.
