Massalia — modern Marseille — had operated as a Greek colonial mint for centuries, but its autonomous coinage effectively ended after Caesar's siege of 49 BC, when the city backed Pompey and paid dearly for it. This small bronze belongs to the reduced, dependent issues struck in the decades following that surrender, when the city retained nominal minting rights but little else.
