Obverse description Confronted foreparts of a lion and a bull facing one another in the characteristic Kroisos bichrome design, rendered in low but bold relief on the irregularly shaped gold flan. The lion, occupying the left portion of the field, displays a stylized mane composed of pellets and curvilinear striations, with a pronounced circular eye. The bull's forepart occupies the right field, its musculature summarily indicated by incised lines. No legend or inscription appears; the design is purely pictorial, reflecting the archaic Lydian artistic tradition of the mid-sixth century BC.
