Reverse description The reverse displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal as struck on the original host coin, featuring the Portuguese escutcheon with the five quinas (shields) arranged in a cross, surrounded by a border of castles. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown in the hammered style characteristic of Portuguese gold coinage of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. A circular Latin legend runs along the outer border, partially obscured due to the irregular flan and the worn condition typical of circulated hammered coinage. The overall design reflects the standard type of the Portuguese Cruzado or quarter-Moeda upon which the 1668 counterstamp was applied.
