背面描述 Horse head in right profile, finely modelled with a sensitively rendered mane and bridled mouth, occupying the central field within a beaded border. Three pellets arranged in a triangular formation are positioned to the lower right of the horse's neck, serving as a distinctive auxiliary mark characteristic of this emission. The horse, a sacred symbol of Carthage and a reference to the legendary founding of the city, is depicted with considerable naturalistic detail despite the small flan. The reverse shows strong Sicilian Greek artistic influence, consistent with Carthaginian coinage of the late fourth century BC.

附加信息

Carthaginian fractional gold of this period was almost certainly struck to pay mercenary forces — the city-state relied almost entirely on hired soldiers and needed coin denominations small enough for individual daily wage payments. The timing aligns with Carthage's sustained military campaigns in Sicily against the Greek cities, a grinding series of conflicts that stretched the treasury across multiple fronts simultaneously.

The SNG Lockett and McClean references place this piece within a well-documented but numerically scarce group; surviving examples turn up almost exclusively in Sicilian and North African hoard contexts.
