Altaist is a small rural commune in Upper Austria, and this 110 Heller note is precisely the kind of hyper-local emergency scrip that proliferated across Austria between 1919 and 1922 when the postwar collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monetary system left small communities without workable small change. Gemeinden issued their own Notgeld not as an act of fiscal independence but out of sheer necessity — the new Austrian crown was unstable, coin metal had been requisitioned, and nobody was making small denominations fast enough to fill the gap.
The 110 Heller denomination is slightly unusual. Most Notgeld ran in round figures; the odd value suggests the commune was targeting a specific circulation need, possibly pricing tied to local goods or transport fares.
