附加信息

Francesco Morosini was elected Doge in 1688 on the strength of his military reputation — he had personally commanded the Venetian forces that retook the Peloponnese from the Ottoman Empire, a campaign that also, infamously, included the 1687 mortar bombardment of the Parthenon, then being used as a powder magazine. The multiple-zecchino format was a prestige denomination, struck in quantities too small for ordinary commerce and intended for diplomatic gifts and high-value mercantile settlement in the Levantine trade.

Morosini died in 1694 at Nauplia while on campaign, still in command of Venetian forces at age 75, making this a relatively short-lived doge issue.
