Erythrai, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, sat on the western coast of Asia Minor directly across from the island of Chios. The magistrate name Dionysiphanes appearing on this issue places it within a period when Erythrai was navigating the competing pressures of Athenian naval dominance and Persian inland authority — the city had switched hands more than once in the preceding decades and would do so again.
BMC Greek 72–73 treats these as a paired sequence, likely sharing obverse die stock.
