This is a counterstamped host coin, not an original Dominica issue. The Eastern Caribbean colonial authorities — facing chronic small-change shortages throughout the late 18th century — authorized the cutting and counterstamping of Spanish colonial 8 Reales to produce fractional currency. The crenated (toothed) center plug punched from this Mexico City 8 Reales circulated separately as a lower denomination, while the holed ring coin circulated as another. Two coins from one.
The KM#3.1 designation places this among the earliest documented Dominica countermark types. The 1798 Mexico 8 Reales host is a Carlos IV milled issue from the Mo mint.
