| Obverse description | Head of Athena facing right, wearing a crested Attic helmet, rendered in archaic Greek style typical of Lesbian civic bronzes of the fourth century BC. The flan is irregular and the surfaces heavily patinated, with the helmet crest discernible in the upper field. The design is set within a plain, unbordered field characteristic of small hammered civic issues. |

Pyrrha was one of the original cities of Lesbos, but by the time this bronze was struck it was already in decline — the city was eventually swallowed by the sea, its ruins submerged in the Gulf of Kalloni. Virtually nothing of the civic infrastructure that produced this coin survives above water.
