| Obverse description | Pomegranate depicted facing, rendered in relief with characteristic lobed body and prominent calyx; the fruit is centrally positioned within the flat field, consistent with the civic badge of Melos, whose name was associated with the pomegranate (melon) in antiquity. The design is bold and simply executed in the archaic provincial style typical of small Aegean bronze coinage. |

Melos, the Cycladic island later infamous for the Athenian massacre of 416 BC recorded by Thucydides, issued autonomous bronze coinage during the Hellenistic period when many smaller island communities reasserted local minting after the disruptions of the Classical age. Issues this small served everyday transaction needs at a level no silver fraction could practically reach. SNG Copenhagen 684 is among the few systematically catalogued specimens from this scarce civic series.
